Barbara is a Polish science teacher, who has recently joined the Amgen Teach Community.
When asked about how Amgen Teach has enhanced her confidence and ability to use inquiry-based science education in her classroom, she explains, "The Amgen Teach training helped me realise that it is better if students have the opportunity to perform specific tasks during the lesson. If they have a question, they need to go look for their own answers. Now, we start by discussing the issue in class, then the students get a card with a particular task, and we go into the field to find answers."
Barbara also comments on the use of materials provided during the Amgen Teach training. "Lessons scripts help students better understand the topics discussed. This way it is easier to prepare research lessons and determine what students should achieve. It is important also to combine topics from different science fields, obtained from teachers of other subjects."
Currently, her students are engaged in various projects, where Barbara can use the IBSE approach, because as she points out, "Students are willing to engage in lessons if they can find something to experience, explore or perform an experiment on. They like to show their work on the big board for all to see and compare. They like the follow-up discussion, the problem solving and to understand why the experiment failed. I want to show them that science is around us every day. It is not confined to the laboratory and anyone can be a scientist".
