Subject and Grade Taught: Science, Chemistry, Mathematics

Participation in Amgen Teach programme: National training in Dublin and the 15th Science Projects Workshop in the Future Classroom Lab
An experienced Irish teacher, Seán has been part of the Amgen Teach Community since the beginning of the programme.
When asked about how Amgen Teach has enhanced his ability to use IBSE in the classroom, Seán explains, "Participating in Amgen Teach has given me the opportunity to share with other professionals in a way that allows me to critically question how I teach, and to ask questions about how I can advance my IBSE skills in a friendly, positive environment. My confidence in using IBSE methodologies has grown through sharing common concerns and by trying out IBSE techniques in class and reflecting on these experiences in a like-minded professional group."
Seán adds, "The workshop activities and discussions scaffolded my use of an inquiry approach in order to guide my student through their coursework projects. Feedback from students has shown that students seemed to grasp the underlying theory behind the projects and better link their experimental results to the theory, and have also been able to explain anomalies and patterns with greater individual initiative."
Currently, his students are getting to know more and more of IBSE experiments. As Seán points out, "My engagement with students has become more consistently active. I have increased the frequency with which I use demonstrations to introduce science mysteries in order to stimulate discussion amongst students. Increasingly these are done using household items, so that students can easily replicate the experiments at home."
