Why should you join this rerun of the ‘Inquiry Based Teaching in Life Sciences' MOOC?

The ‘Inquiry Based Teaching in Life Sciences' MOOC is meant to enhance life sciences teachers' pedagogical competencies and practices, and improve their conceptual understanding of life science to help them further establish and disseminate Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE).

The MOOC offers a selection of tested, classroom activities and resources from various European countries to empower life science teachers (12-19 year old students) in introducing IBSE methodologies in the classroom and help them reflect on their own practices.

Key objectives

In this MOOC, participants will:

  • Experience Inquiry as an adult learner
  • Acquire the skills and confidence to implement Inquiry Based Teaching in the classroom
  • Learn how to reflect on their own teaching practice
  • Enhance their personal and their students' conceptual understanding of life sciences
  • Explore various formal and informal assessment approaches for Inquiry

Who is it for?

The course is aimed at life science teachers (of 12-19 year old students) from Europe and beyond. Participants from any country are welcome to join, bearing in mind that the MOOC will be offered in English.

Registration and calendar

The ‘Inquiry Based Teaching in Life Sciences' MOOC will launch on Tuesday, 9th April 2019, but online registration is already open here. The course will run for 6.5 weeks, with a total of five modules (one module per week) and an extra 1.5 grace week at the end of the course to ensure participants have adequately covered all modules. The workload is estimated to be approximately three to four hours per week.

Participants will receive digital module badges (OpenBadges*) for every completed module of the course, as well as a course badge and a course certificate upon completion of the full course.

Other useful information

A closed Facebook group has been created to support the MOOC and facilitate discussion. Participants will be provided with further information following registration to the course.

Once the course starts, we will be using the hashtag #AmgenTeachMOOC on Twitter.


About the European Schoolnet Academy

The MOOC is hosted on the European Schoolnet Academy, a platform where you can learn about innovation in the school and classroom through online professional development courses for teachers in primary and secondary schools. The courses offered on this platform are completely free of charge.

Educators can benefit immensely from the project by taking advantage of the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), which is a course of study made available over the Internet without charge to a very large number of people.

As for assessment strategies and evaluation methodologies, there are quizzes, peer reviews and self-reviews. At the end of a MOOC, digital badges and digital certificates are made available for the course participants.
