Esperanza Moreno Guirado, Spain

School: Sant Jaume School

Subject and Grade Taught: Biology with students 15-17 years

Years Teaching: 18 years

Participation in Amgen Teach programme: National training in Barcelona

Esperanza is an experienced biology teacher, who has joined the Amgen Teach Community during the second and third year of the programme.

When asked about Amgen Teach, Esperanza explains, "I learned how to work in collaborative groups with my students, and how to correctly present a topic to encourage them to find a solution to the questions asked."

Esperanza also says, "I have learned how to scaffold activities so that the students can progress by themselves. However, we are also focussed on the students producing something at the end of the process, for example, a video, a scientific poster or an interview and to make this output visible to the rest of the educational community or neighborhood. This is vital for the learning process and helps to make them aware of what they have achieved."

Currently, her students are learning about stem cells and are engaged in activities, which will culminate in a scientific poster competition. Esperanza believes that "this way of working with them is totally different from the traditional one. At the end of the process, the students feel very proud of their work and what they have achieved."
