Emel Gürkan, Turkey
School: Ankara Bahçeşehir Koleji
Subject and Grade Taught: Science Education; 11-13 age group
Years' Teaching: 7 years
Participation in Amgen Teach: One year
Emel is a middle school science teacher, who joined the Amgen Teach Community one year ago.
Her teaching method has changed as "at university" she said, "I have learned about inquiry-based learning model but I have not had the chance to implement it in my practice. During an Amgen Teach workshop I attended last year, I learned how this model could be brought into my classroom, letting my students research and discuss topics in class".
Her interaction with students changed and she started asking more questions to students in order to increase their engagement with the topics. After asking questions such as "Why does the world not fall in space?" or "Why do other planets not collide with earth?" she shows them "simulations or other hand materials like "play dough" and let them use these tools to create their own solar system and understand the phenomenon better".
Together with her colleagues, Emel discusses and shares what she learned and how they can improve their methods. Thanks to Amgen Teach "I understand the way my students think and by asking the right questions I help them understand the topic on their own".
